Introduction
We are delighted to announce the call for abstracts for the international conference Water Science for Impact, which will take place from 16 – 18 October 2018 at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in Wageningen, The Netherlands. This large international and multidiscipinary water conference is convened within the framework of the WUR 100 years centennial celebrations, and is jointly organised by WUR, Deltares, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, KWR Watercycle Research Institute, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL). The conference will focus on the interaction between science and society in developing solutions for pressing water related problems as identified in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Aim and Scope
Water Science for Impact will focus on water quality and quantity in the broadest sense. The conference brings together leaders in science, policy, and the public and private sectors to examine water science from a multidisciplinary perspective. Water science is crucial to expanding our understanding of water quality and quantity related issues that humankind encounters. Such understanding is key towards identifying critical water-related challenges, developing novel solutions and implementing steps that contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals. We welcome contributions from both the natural and social sciences, as well as from stakeholders and decision makers and from private and public sectors.
Target group
This conference aims at exchanging scientific knowledge and bridging gaps between scientists, policy makers, NGOs and the business community.
Themes
We welcome submissions around three different themes. Abstracts may focus on water systems at different spatial scales, including: urban or regional water systems; river and delta systems; surface and groundwater systems; and marine systems. Abstracts may also include different approaches, including: observing and analytical approaches, system approaches; modelling approaches; experimental approaches; trans-disciplinary and participatory approaches.

Special issue
The Water Science for Impact conference is happy to announce that there will be two special issues in two journals specifically related to this conference: Science of the Total Environment and the Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences. We offer opportunities to all authors who have accepted abstracts to submit a complete manuscript for consideration in these special issues. It is important to note, that all manuscripts will undergo a rigorous review process in accordance with journal’s normal review policy. So, acceptance of an abstract to the conference does not entitle authors to a publication in Science of the Total Environment nor the Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences.
Submissions for Science of the Total Environment
STOTEN welcome authors to submit manuscripts for the special issue Water Science for Impact. Manuscripts from authors with an accepted abstract for the Water Science for Impact conference can submit their complete manuscript through the Science of the Total Environment website (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/science-of-the-total-environment). After logging in to the submission page, authors can select submission to “VSI: Water Science for Impact”. The subject of the manuscript must fit with the accepted abstract; manuscripts describing work significantly different from that presented at the conference will be directly rejected. The deadline for submission has been extended to January 15th 2019. Please carefully review the journal’s scope and the author instructions prior to preparing a manuscript to ensure that your submission fits within the journal’s focus and guidelines. Submissions will undergo a normal review process, including peer-review, revision and rebuttal prior to the guest editor making a final decision.
Submissions for the Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences (JIES)
JIES welcomes authors from the conference to participate in the special issue “Modelling Water Science for Impact”. Modelling is an important tool used in water science, and there is a burgeoning need to develop integrated modelling approaches across disciplines to address looming water-related issues, such as risk assessments of hydro-climatic extremes under changing climate and human interventions, existing and future water quality and quantity uncertainties, surface and groundwater policy instruments, as well as societal impacts and implications to UN SDGs. JIES is open-access. Editor in Chief Prof. Carolien Kroeze is happy to offer some free publishing waivers to participants who submit their abstract (200 words) to jies@wur.nl by November 12th, 2018. Selected abstracts will be invited to submit their full manuscript by December 21st, 2018. There is are an additional number of waivers available for those who submit their abstract by 1 December 2018, and full papers by 1 February 2019. Submissions will undergo a normal review process. For more details on JIES, please refer to the JIES website (https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/nens20/current).
